Samsung Digital Imaging has provided the author of this review with the mentioned digital imaging device.

Functions of digital cameras have been diversified. Therefore, more functions should be added and are supported in one button. Digital camera companies try to satisfy users by releasing digital cameras smaller, slimmer, and having more various functions. However, on the other hand, Samsung starts to install Touch on digital cameras with releasing simpler, slimmer products. That is the ST series from Samsung.

Samsung Digital Imaging has adopted touch technology to the ST550(TL225). It makes the LCD bigger 3.5” by eliminating buttons on the back. And the touch of the Haptic can be used in the ST550(TL225).

+ Acting with gravity?

The UI of the ST550(TL225) has followed previous intuitive interface, so Samsung camera users can easily be adapted to the Touch UI. By adopting Smart Gesture (Motion Recognition), it supports a perfect touch function. Smart Gesture is a function to integrate Mode setting, Play, Drag, Rotation, Delete, Magnification, and so on.

This is the mode change function of Smart Gesture. On the right side of the LCD, clicking the mode change icon with motion to up/down/left/right side, you can change Video, Smart Auto, and Program mode. So by one touch, you can change the setting and take a shot depending on the situation.

+ Easy and convenient with 3.5” touch screen.

The core of the design simplicity of the ST550(TL225) is the 3.5” Haptic touch screen LCD. If you are not satisfied with less than 3” LCD screen, you might be a little confused by the big LCD of the ST550(TL225). All buttons disappear on the back, so all functions can be controlled by touch and motion. And there’s an explanation to help you use the touch screen for beginners. The touch screen is a capacitive type, not a resistive type, so it offers high recognition rate and prevents damages on the LCD.

It’s the 3.5” touch screen and Smart Gesture. By applying the Haptic UI, this intuitive interface is made by icons to be easily changed and selected.

- Drawing X on the LCD in Play mode -> Deleting a picture

- Drawing a circle on the LCD in Play mode -> Rotating a picture

- Tilting left/rightward -> Previous/Next photo / Slideshow

+ No.1 of Self shots?? Looking and taking!!

You’ve taken pictures with trying to find a handsome angle? You don’t need a handsome angle any more. Through 1.5” Front display, you can take a self shot with watching you. You don’t need to look at a small dented lens next to the lens. Besides, it supports Dual IS, so you are easily able to take a self shot. Moreover, Beauty Shot is also supported. – Especially, this is for women users.

+ Fun to be taken with Dual LCD

There are 3 modes in the Dual LCD of the ST550(TL225). ‘ON’ shows the same screen on the back and front. ‘iFn’ displays the Shot information. The last icon displays the ready status when in a half shutter.

Turing on the Front display, the same screen is displayed on the back and front. The 1.5” LCD is neither that big nor that small. It’s 61K pixels TFT LCD. The resolution might be slightly low, but considering the price and battery, I think it’s appropriate.

The ST550(TL225) supports functions popular by women users. Especially, if you take a lot of pictures of your children, you’d like the Children mode of the ST550(TL225). Using the Children mode, funny animation is displayed on the Front display. This will get an attention from your children and stop them from moving for a moment. Therefore, you don’t need help from others. When the timer is working, the Front display shows numbers, so users will not miss the moment of being taken.

Activating ‘iFN’ function on the Front display, you can confirm the information of the camera through the Front display. Important information is displayed with icons such as Shutter status, Macro, Mode, Flash, and so on. If you are not comfortable to watch the lens, you can look at the LCD. Besides, you can see if the camera setting is right, so it’s good to ask someone to take a shot.

+ Closer and more vivid with 3cm Macro

One of the most important functions of a camera is Macro. The ST550(TL225) supports the 3cm Super Macro mode. In order to take details of subjects or plants, you should use the Macro function. Also by using 4.6 optical zoom in Macro mode, you can get out-focusing effect which could get from DSLR telephoto angle lens. Recent digital cameras support Super Macro. The ST550(TL225) supports 3cm, but considering other cameras supporting 2cm Super macro, how about we decrease the focus length? As a matter of fact, it’s not easy to take a Macro shot without Tripod with a compact digital camera, but anyway it’s good to be better than others, right?

+ 1280*720 HD video

The video mode of the ST550(TL225) supports 1280*720 HQ quality. By connecting to a TV or a monitor, you can watch videos in a optimized size and quality. Plug-in can also be applied to Videos, so you can get better and different videos by using the Plug-in. But I’m not satisfied that voice is not recorded while zooming. You can’t record voices while zooming, so you’d better not activate it. You can previously set the frame. Considering that DSLR cameras record voices even while zooming, sounds of the ST550(TL225) need to be better.
