This time, I repainted Samsung’s one of newest products, NX10, which surprised me with its aspect quite compact as a mirrorless. Regardless of the good mobility, it also supports video shooting in a fairly good quality. What mostly I thought while disassembling the material is that the NX10 has pretty impressive lens for itself.

This is the Samsung NX10 which I’ve made the new figure with. After installing the hood on the bundle lens, it shows off an ergonimic design.

It’s better to close with the cap while operating in order to avoid nudging important parts of the camera.

I loosened all the screws even two hidden inside of the flash.

There was another screw hidden inside of the rubber adhered for the grip.

After eliminating all the screws, I opened the back board then it’s just lifted.

You guys must pay attention in this part. There are two soldered joints you’re seeing just above my thumb, I felt chocked when I touched them with my fingures, so be careful with.

Finally I disassembled the Samsung NX10.

Then I detached all the small components for a perfect repainting.

The housing is completely masked. Now it’s the time to work on the lens.

It’s a 18-55mm standard zoom lens.

I detached all the screws from the mount.

Same for the mainboard.

There are three sawlike gears behind of the lens. One of them is a non-fixed gear, so beware of keeping this.

The screws inside of the hole need to be loosened.

You can separate the tube from the rest when all other three screws on the mainboard are sucessfully eliminated.

The inside of the tube needs to be protected.

I measured the diameter of the hood.

Then cut paper streamers in a round shape to prevent from paint.

I prepared an epoxy primer to paint roughly.

I let them to be dried during one day, then painted over with desert-sand color. I didn’t attach any example pictures showing the painting work but, you will see the colored material in next pictures.

It’s the time to make military patterns. I overlapped papers streamers to produce numerous patterns in the same figure at the same time.

I painted in white all the parts except where the patterns are sticked. I felt so excited when the stickers are all got off !

These are all the pieces painted in military pattern. After finishing lettering, I covered them over with pigment in Polyurethane. Just let them dry during one day.

When skins are solidified, you can begin to assemble the pieces by putting the head.

Putting the front board. Don’t forget to tighten two screws inside of flash.

I set AMOLED screen before covering with the back board. Be careful while operating this part because the screen can be destroyed when if you’re trying to push without correct insertion.

Well, the first step is done.

I put the grip on. Now let’s finish the lens.

Verifying if the switch works. The pannel usually becomes flexible as before with time.

This summer I taught a cooking class for Korean kids. This turned out much more stressful than planned. The original vision was to have the kids working in teams of two making different foods. But they turned impractical when I found out that most of the students didn’t have high enough English levels for complex instruction. There were also a couple in there who were notorious amongst the teachers for being a little careless and clumsy.
So, I came up with themes for each class, which went for two days a week for three weeks. I was quickly reminded of how picky kids are. No one wanted the sandwiches in the first class. By the second class, I had banned the phrase, “I don’t like ____,” in the classroom. It’s a cooking class, not a “What Billy doesn’t like” class.

We started getting into a groove midway through. We took a whole watermelon, turned it into juice by hand, and made it into a sorbet. Frozen chocolate dipped bananas were popular. The kids took turns churning cream into butter. And they went nuts over the pizza toast.

For the final lesson, they voted to do dosirak. The Japanese call them “bento,” but this is Korea. I showed up that morning with sliced cheese, mini sausages, carrots, cherry tomatoes, lettuce and eight containers of microwavable rice. I went to work getting the rice all zapped, cutting up the carrots and getting out all the plates, plastic knives, scissors and bowls.
I had reminded the kids to bring boxes for their dosiraks, and only one student forgot. That wasn’t a big deal. He could use one of the rice containers. You don’t need a fancy box to make one of these.
Now, I’m not dosirak expert, but I taught them the basics. Frequently dip your hands in water to keep them from sticking to the rice—like a sushi chef. Use lettuce as the base background. Have fun using different colors and textures. Try to create 3-D effects by layering ingredients. Accent with tomatoes and sausages.

I must tell you that I was impressed with their work. They seriously put their hearts into their lunchboxes, and I hope they had a good time. I didn’t hear as much griping this time. A lot of them came up with much better boxes than me. That’s not saying much, but the snowman with the carrot nose and the “crazy pig” were little strokes of genius.

I was so proud.

Just like its shape, the island is named “Crescent Island”. The island isn’t big, but is surely entitled to be called the most peaceful place on Earth.

To enter the island, you need to take a boat. Because water has dried in the Lake Naivasha, you can also get to the island by road, but then, what’s the fun? Approaching the island on boat is much more exciting.

You are greeted by a small sign that reads Crescent Island.

This island gained popularity with the movie “Out of Africa”. It is also well known as the scene for the Tomb Raider that starred Angelina Jolie. The ancestors of the animals living here now were the ones relocated for the movie shooting. Then, the lake was deep that the animals were trapped on the island. But now, many animals escape the island by crossing the land.

This place is practically the one and only walking safari in Kenya. There are no carnivores that can harm humans. You may want to watch out for hippos, 3~4 meter long snakes and hyena that appear occasionally at night.

Ben’s note : 3 days of intense work to make this huge panorama of Cologne, Germany’s fourth-largest city. This is a 360 degrees view, I tried to get as many details as possible, sometimes repainting different parts of the cityscape. The original composition is really big (almost 20.000 pixels wide!) because I assembled more than 30 photos. I took all of them from the top of “KölnTurm” when I was in Germany 2 weeks ago… (FYI, I didn’t use any autopano or fisheye). The city’s famous Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Cologne. The University of Cologne (Universität zu Köln) is one of Europe’s oldest universities.

Cologne is a major cultural center of the Rhineland and has a vibrant arts scene. Cologne is home to more than 30 museums and hundreds of galleries. Exhibitions range from local ancient Roman archeological sites to contemporary graphics and sculpture. The Cologne Trade Fair hosts a number of trade shows such as Art Cologne, imm Cologne International Furniture Fair and the Photokina. Cologne is also well-known for its celebration of Cologne Carnival, the annual reggae summerjam, and Cologne Gay Pride. Within Germany, Cologne is also known as an important media center. Several radio and television stations, including Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), RTL and VOX, have their headquarters in the city. ©Ben Heine

Ben’s note : This is the landscape I saw from the top of Beynac Castle, in the Dordogne department of France. I visited this beautiful place last week. I spent several days to assemble and edit some 20 photos I took there (no Fisheye and no AutoPano). Ben’s note : This is where I used to revise my books when I made my degree in Journalism. I didn’t use a fisheye lens. I have actually assembled some 14 photos I took when I was there. The original image is huge (12000 pixels wide). The “Mont des Arts” (meaning “hill of the arts”) is a historic site in the center of Brussels, Belgium. The showcase square was created for the Universal Exposition held in Brussels in 1910. It featured a park and a monumental staircase with cascading fountains descending the gentle slope from Place Royale down to Boulevard de l’Empereur.

The original square was destroyed during the post-war construction frenzy known as Brusselization; between 1954 and 1965, the square and its surroundings gave way to massive, severely geometric postmodern structures such as the Royal Library of Belgium and the Congress Palace. The Mont des Arts offers one of Brussels’ finest views. From the vantage point on a hill, the famous tower of the Brussels Town Hall at the Grand Place is clearly visible. ©Ben Heine

Document the life.

#1. The first video will joy our ears rather than present the beauty of visual. The well-known classic music, Canon, was played with a number of musicians with classic guitars. The play was filmed with WB2000(TL350) camera. Although the play is happening in indoor, we can still listen to the beautiful sound and harmony of guitars.

This annual festival is one of the many popular festivals in Japan. Beforehand, a lot of people warned us that it would be very very crowded, but due to all of our big music festivals in Belgium, we felt prepared.

What we saw was something quite different though. The Japanese people who seemed (with all respect) quite modest, closed and calm turned into wild party animals during the consecutive celebration nights.

A lot of them dressed up, most of them in traditional kimono, but we bumped into a lot of silly costumes as well.

The main attraction of the nights we visited seemed to be a group of Shinto followers carrying a mikoshi (a portable shrine) on their shoulders, jumping up and down and shouting. It created a very energetic atmosphere.

Despite the beautiful decorations, the streets were dark. Too dark for most cameras perhaps, so I didn’t have to think long which camera to bring. I took the NX10 because of its ISO 1600 and 3200 setting in combination with the pancake f2 lens. The results were a bit grainy, but after all these are high ISO values. In my opinion, this grain doesn’t bother and I like the quality, especially when you think of the size and weight of this camera.

Oh, since my last post almost a month elapsed. That’s a lot of time, a lot happened in that period. I had a lot of happiness and pleasure, but it came at a very unpleasant thing. Our beloved dog Cortnay, unfortunately died.

I wanted to thank him for the time when he was with us. Thank you puppy, we will remember You forever!

As a holder of two cameras NX10 with set of lenses and EX1 I have a problem. I do not know the more I want to use. Of course, between them is very big difference, but both are superb. For the EX1 does not have only a wide-angle converter, I am curious how it works. EX1 is has one maybe more ;) advantages over the NX10 has a super macro mode (Of course, unless the NX10 will not have a macro lens). And I love the photos taken from very close range. Ordinary things become extraordinary time.
