Be Standing Model

caem_frontThis is my first day! Let me briefly introduce myself. I am ‘Ca’em’ and I plan to make up my ‘CutcUtcuT’ Post with Samsung digital camera. I have basic knownloge of camera, but lack presenting skills. So I am sad. I threw myself to this posting, thinking that I may as well use this occasion to study presentation and photo taking skills to deepen my understanding of photography. Maybe this is reckless. My wish is to guide you to the world seen through Samsung digital camera ‘WB500(HZ10W)’. I am confident that my ‘WB500(HZ10W)’ will deliver impressive pictures that match those taken with DSLR. You won’t be disappointed, I assure you! ‘Compact digital camera rebels against DSLR’ may be a perfect sub-title for this posting.

The first step to this bold challenge is – Wanna be a standing model!! Stuffed dolls displayed in a very mundane and boring way. Leave me struggling with how to position the subjects and from which angle to take the picture. Still-life items, in particular, appear organized at first glance, but are actually all over the place if you look from the top. It’s difficult to decide on where to focus. I want to highlight the funny faces of the animals, but how do I do that? It doesn’t make a huge difference for adults who look down at the dolls from the top. But, what about kids? Will they be able to discover the attractiveness of the dolls?

I try shooting from the top, side and the front. Items that are voluminous express themselves quite well regardless of the angle. However, the flat ones lying on the floor are not expressed well from whatever the angle. My shadow even intervened when I took the picture from the top. How can I make the pictures prettier? I wondered. Finally, I decide to have the flat dolls stand up.

How can I have those dolls lying around so uninterested stand up? What is the use of the beautiful colors if these dolls cannot express themselves 100%? How do I keep them standing? The solution was not that hard to find. A clip!

Okay, okay, dolls made of felt stand up pretty easily, but still, I want to pat myself on the back for deciding to have the dolls standing. Rather than have all of them standing, I decide to have only a select few stand up to give stronger emphasis

Now, the dolls appear much more dynamic, don’t they? These animals seem to be smiling more brightly then when they were lying down!! Look! I had no idea the lion was smiling like this until it stood up. Personally, I think this is the best picture of the day as it vividly illustrates the texture and feeling of felt. Way to go, you dandy lion with the tie!

Tip>> For a more accurate expression of the feel of the material, I selected ‘marco’ for all. I thought macro might be too challenging for the first day, but I personally like close-up. There is no better camera than WB500(HZ10W) to illustrate perfect texture and color. Compared with other compact cameras, this one definitely excels at highlighting the key focus without blurring. WB500(HZ10W) is a perfect match for close-up lovers like me.

Now, the subjects are no longer all over the place. They are exactly where they ought to be. Color? Good! Harmony? Perfect! ‘Ca’em’ is quite satisfied. You can apply the same approach to other flat subjects such as coins or badges.

caem_001_002If clip doesn’t work, you can always resort to ‘Gummi(clay)’, readily available in stores nearby. Standing up position is especially helpful in addressing the reflection issue caused by lighting, especially for shiny subjects such as badges, and also in expressing volume. I’m just a beginner. If you know any other effective ways to express the subjects, please let me know!

caem_001_004I plan to share more photo-taking tips going forward. Of course, within the limits of my knowledge… You can have your hopes high, though! I will be taking so many pictures that you might worry that my camera would blow up! Haha.. With every episode, ‘Ca’em’ will return a better professional. Stay tuned!!
