[ST1000(CL65)] Let’s make a mobile Internet Photo Center by using GPS and WiFi

Samsung Electronics has provided the author of this review with the mentioned digital imaging device.

The new concept digital camera ST1000(CL65) from Samsung has many fun functions. I’m going to look at this camera focusing on those functions.

clip_image001

There’s no button on the ST1000(CL65). Everything is controlled by the touch screen. The picture above shows that everything can be done by the touch screen in the ST1000(CL65).

clip_image002

Shot function selection is also chosen by the touch screen such as Dual mode, Video recording mode, Auto Smart, Program mode, and Auto mode.

clip_image003

Selecting the Scene function, the camera automatically sets the optimized values. 13 scenes can be selected, and these scenes are also selected from the Auto Smart mode.

The biggest feature of the ST1000(CL65) is GPS and WiFi functions. Using these 2 functions properly, you can take and transfer pictures through the Internet at any places. It means you don’t need a PC any more to share your pictures with people all around the world.

Let’s take a picture with GPS.

clip_image004

Pushing the GPS button, you can see the setting screen of the GPS. An initial value is off. Let’s set it on.

clip_image005

Turning the GPS function on, you can see it receives the GPS information. It takes some time to receive GPS, so setting the GPS on doesn’t mean it works immediately. However, looking at it after 10~15 sec, you can see the activated GPS button and the current location. From the picture above, you can see the blue letter “˜GPS’ change to “˜On’ and “˜Guro-Gu’.

You’ve taken a picture, so let’s transfer it to a sharing web site through the Internet using WiFi. It couldn’t have been better if it supports 3G networking, but it only supports WiFi, not 3G networking. Wherever you get wireless AP, you can use it. Using Wibro Egg, you can transfer pictures through the Egg in the available region.

clip_image006

Pushing the Wireless Network button, this menu comes up. Now it supports Internet transfer, Email transfer, transferring between cameras using DLNA protocol, TV transfer, and Bluetooth. Let’s take a look at the Internet and Email transfer.

clip_image007

Selecting the Internet Transfer function, supported web sites pop up such as Picasa web from Google, Facebook, YouTube, and Samsung Imaging. I don’t like that it doesn’t supports Flickr which is the most popular. Now it’s under negotiation, so we need to wait more.

clip_image008

Select Picasa from them. I could test it, because I had an ID in Picasa. Selecting it, ID/PW window pops up. And let’s login.

clip_image009

Once logging in, it starts to load pictures saved in Picasa. You can see those pictures and transfer pictures.

clip_image010

Registered photo folders come up.

clip_image011

Pushing the Upload button, pictures stored in the ST1000(CL65) comes up.

clip_image012

Let’s select pictures to upload on Picasa and push the OK button.

clip_image013

Then, folder and title which pictures will be saved in are shown. You can change the name of the folder, but the title is fixed as a date. Let’s change the album name to Album01 and push the upload button.

clip_image014

After finishing the transfer, you will see “˜Transfer Complete’ message and “˜Move to Blog’ button.

Let’s check pictures from Picasa.

clip_image015

Connecting Picasa, you will see the folder “Album01″ and in the folder you will see transferred pictures.

clip_image016

Selecting a picture, you can see it and if the picture was taken with GPS On, the photo location is displayed with Google Map. This picture was taken in Mok-dong, Seoul. It’s so convenient to confirm the location through the GPS.

It’s not only WiFi transfer. You can also send an email. Like you’ve seen, now only 4 web sites are supported such as Picasa, Facebook, YouTube, and Samsung Imaging, but using Email, you are able to send pictures to different services. For example, recently Twitter is getting popular and you can use TwitPic offering pictures to Twitter. And you can use Email service from Flickr. However, for a test, here we send an email to Picasa.

clip_image017

Going to the Web setting screen in Picasa, you can set the Email address. Then, once selecting the Email transfer function from the wireless menu screen, you can type Email address in. You can insert the Picasa email address in “˜To’, and your email address in “˜From’. Then, let’s push the OK button.

clip_image018

Then, you can select pictures to transfer through Email. Select and Push the OK button.

clip_image019

When it’s finished, the complete message comes up.

Let’s check if it’s transferred properly or not from Picasa.

clip_image020

Files will be transferred to Drop box. You can see the pictures you transferred.

clip_image021

I sent a picture which doesn’t include GPS information. Like you see here, there’s no location information. Of course, users can insert the information, but it’s so inconvenient. Anyway, the email works properly.

Besides, using the DLNA function, you can transfer pictures to a TV supporting DLNA protocol and see them, or using Bluetooth, you can transfer pictures to another device. The biggest feature of the ST1000(CL65) is Geo-tagging through the GPS and file transfer by WiFi. Like I mentioned, if you have WiBro Egg, you can share your pictures only with ST1000(CL65) without the help of a PC, so it’s very useful.
